Life Changer August 24, 2010 Dave (New Jersey) This stuff is amazing! I feel so much more comfortable in my skin now than I have before. I wish I had found this product sooner. I used to use a facial cleaner that contained Sodium Laureth Sulfate as a main ingredient, but it gave me tight and dry skin at times. When I researched it, I found that this main ingredient is actually a cheap chemical detergent that strips the skin of everything it touches, including its own natural moisture and sebum levels. Well, this product by Philosophy does not have this ingredient and I think that is its main asset. Also it has some other ingredients that are very nice as well, including rosewood oil and sandalwood oil. It leaves my skin moisturized and clean and it almost has a glow to it. Also it leaves behind a very faint, but fresh scent which I like. It is sort of sweet and almost smells like a verbena. All in all this is a fantastic facial wash that I wish I had found sooner! Thank you!
Very Sensitive Skin - Worked for me August 21, 2010 Connie I have extremely sensitive skin and this line of products really works for me - I've been using Philosophy products for about 2 months, and noticed a huge difference right away. I'd given up on finding any product that I could use successfully. I first used it when my girlfriend recommended it while our families were on vacation together and she let me try it out for that week. Omigosh! What a difference! Best way to describe it is that my face felt clean and "balanced". For the first time I could use a cleanser and not have a bad reaction. And the other products in the line are great too - Philosophy Hope In A Jar Therapeutic Moisturizer For Dry Sensitive Skin has to be my favorite! Highly recommend.
Worth a second try August 13, 2010 J. Monroe (Texas) I first received this in the sample bottle, and honestly, I wasn't all that impressed with it. I wasn't crazy about the smell, it didn't lather, and it just didn't seem to do anything special. I kept it around for "bar nights" when I needed to really scrub out all the cigarette smoke from my pores, or nights I was too lazy to take off my eye makeup. (This works great for eye-makeup, and I use waterproof everything.)
Fast forward to my senior year of college. I got mono, and my skin completely freaked out. I would get huge cystic pimples around my chin, on the corners of my mouth, and in between my eyebrows. NOTHING I tried seemed to work. I used Proactiv, Neutrogena products, all the over-the-counter acne sets. I was starting to get desperate, but after a night out, I used the Purity and went to bed. I woke up, and my skin felt smoother, it wasn't as dry and sensitive from all the acne stuff, and my breakouts seemed smaller. I kept using it every night, along with my acne cleanser in the morning and spot treatment at night. The Purity kept my face from getting too dry, breakouts were few and far between and healed faster. Within a week or so I saw a huge difference. In three weeks my skin was almost completely clear.
I've completely stopped using any acne stuff other than the spot treatment, and my skin has stayed clear. I don't even need moisturizer. I still have blackheads and the occasional pimple, but the ones I get now are small and go away within a day or two. I can go into public without concealer- which is awesome, because I spent so much time dabbing on concealers and powder to hide my skin.
I can't promise that this will work for everyone, but for my skin, which is dry, slightly sensitive, and breaks out due to hormones/stress, it worked great for me. It is expensive, but it lasts a long time. I'd recommend trying the 4oz sample bottle first- it lasts a good two or three months and isn't priced much higher than your typical drugstore brand.
Clean without the tightness August 1, 2010 T.B. (Herndon, VA) A nice clean without over-drying. The cleanser is creamy and doesn't have a lot of lather. The smell is different but not "bad" necessarily. You don't need a lot so the bottle lasts a long time.
Good, but not for everyone July 30, 2010 liz blue eyes I now use a different brand's cleanser because my skin has changed in the last couple of years (it's now normal-to-dry still with a slight tendency towards mild acne). I find it to be too drying and a deep enough cleanser now. I used this years ago as a part of the Makeup Optional Kit and then just by itself. It is a good cleanser with a consistency between a gel and a milky cleanser. It is decent, but not great, at taking off makeup. Prepping with eye makeup remover and following up with toner is needed if you wear eye and/or face makeup, respectively. The cleanser's best trait, IMO, is that it does not irritate the eyes AT ALL. This is true whether you have heavy makeup that needs to be removed or not, too. I've never been able to find a cleanser with quite this level of gentleness. Unfortunately, it seems to add to my skin's mild acne tendency. I'm not sure if it's the oils or what in it, but when I stopped using it, my occasional acne cleared up quickly and easily. It has a very mild fragrance and it's not at all unpleasent.
(Just to share my current routine...In the morning, I now use Lancome Exfoliance Comfort as a scrub/cleanser [gets those dead skin cells off and preps the skin for even makeup coverage], then follow with Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer or my regular foundation and other makeup. I use Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Cleanser and Moisturizer at night when I don't wear makeup. I add Clinique Eye Makeup Remover and Lancome Toner to my nighttime cleansing, if I wore makeup that day. This regime works great for my slightly dry skin.)
I really recommend buying the 8 oz. size if you're the only one in the household using it. The even smaller bottle is good for travel. The larger bottles seem to go rancid before one person can use it up- that has been both my experience and my mother's. One 8 oz. bottle lasts a long time, too, even if you cleanse with it twice a day, as you don't need much. A dime-sized amount was plenty for me. I would just lightly dampen my face, then rub it in, in circular motions. You don't want to use too much water with this, except for rinsing, of course. I can understand why it's one woman's miracle product, and another woman will completely dislike it. It's not a one size fits all cleanser, no matter how it's marketed. FYI- It does work nicely in a pinch as a shaving balm, as it's soothing and a little creamy, as well as fairly translucent.
Side note: My mother has very oily, thick skin and she loves this as a morning cleanser. I thought I would share her experience since she has very different skin from mine. She finds this product very soothing and it doesn't create acne for her. But she admits that she has to use a more astringent, foaming cleanser for her skin type to get it "really clean" at night (she always wears foundation and powder). She uses no moisturizer or anything in the morning, but does use Clinique eye makeup remover and Lancome toner and eye cream at night.
Hope this review helps. :)
