Effects depend on skin type. February 9, 2010 Adriane Skinner (WY) I used this cream five years ago, an unsealed 2-oz. jar I bought on eBay just to experiment with because I had heard such great reviews. I remember the consistency being quite solid and the smell extremely chemical, although it did fade very quickly after application. I was 25 at the time, prone to breakouts, and I live in an extremely dry, cold climate at 7,000 feet with up to 7-month winters. My first experience with Hope in a Jar wasn't super; it made my skin sensitive, albeit very soft, and I felt a mild burning or tingling after application. I quit after a couple of weeks and went back to Aquaphor.
Five years later I found 1-oz jar at TJ Maxx ($20 instead of $30 at Sephora) and thought I'd try it again. I'm glad I did; I've tried everything from Clinique to Avon, natural oils like jojoba and olive and shea, Olay and Neutrogena, Eucerin, Elizabeth Arden, La Mer, prescription creams, and Cetaphil. My skin was STILL flaky and spotty. The sealed jar I got this time contains a very different substance, a much creamier, less chemical-smelling lotion. After two months of use during the harshest weather of the year, my skin has completely cleared up, is soft and even toned, never too oily, and occasional exfoliation keeps it from being flaky at all. It isn't sensitive and makeup goes on a lot easier when I bother to wear it, but I almost feel I don't have to. The smell reminds me of a gin and tonic, oddly enough. It smells clean to me.
Skin's needs change as it ages. My skin has clearly changed a lot in the last five years; products I used a few years ago don't necessarily work the same anymore. Everyone's skin is going to react differently to different products (especially if the product contains specific ingredients they're sensitive to), but I also wonder if people aren't getting expired products or keeping them around too long. This product's smell begins to get stronger as soon as the seal is broken, and continues to do so until it's used up or discarded. I've discovered that keeping it in the fridge not only keeps the smell from becoming overpowering but also keeps the consistency smooth and is very refreshing to apply.
I'm glad I got a better sample of this product. I'll probably use it until my skin changes again and rejects it. I've come across other products that are inconsistent- things like Farouk Silk Oil treatment I absolutely buy at a salon instead of Wal*Mart or the grocery store; I'm convinced they're distributing a lower-quality product to discount stores, because you find bottles that are watered down and smell like alcohol.
I'm amused by the very angry and disappointed reviews I find on here. I don't think I've ever seen this product marketed as a miracle cream, and I wish people would be analytical instead of emotional when they write a review so it's helpful to others. There's not a lot of middle ground; people seem to either love it or hate it. I'm happy with it for now, and even happier that they've come out with a version that contains sunscreen. I'm trying that next.
stinks like a zoo..... February 5, 2010 Jennifer Jen (Blacksburg VA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i was wondering how bad a face cream could possibly smell after reading all the reviews...and it does smell quite awful. I feel like I've been walking around in a vet or zoo for half the day. it does a fair job as a moisturizer.
This is wonderful January 8, 2010 Jennifer Fry (Fremont Ohio) I have..well HAD severe acne. I started using Purity. That helped quite a bit, no more blackheads and skin felt cleaner. Then I went to the dermatologist b/c of some cystic acne that would not clear up. He put me on tazorac, VERY drying to skin. I bought some Hope in Jar..oh my goodness..my skin.. I don't have to wear make up for the first time since I was 15! (38 now) I love this stuff! The doc can't believe that I can tolerate the Hope in a Jar in the winter..
and I have never ever worn moisturize before..b/c all of them I ever tried were terrible feeling on my skin. Thank-you Philosphy! I no longer have to use any prescriptions..just my purity/hope routine!
The smell should be a warning December 29, 2009 Julie H. Rose 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Honestly, I don't get the raves about this product. I've tried it twice, thinking perhaps the first time was some sort of mistake, but no, it wasn't.
It has a terrible medicinal smell that causes me to practically recoil. The urge to wash it off was strong, but the first time I used the product, I figured I'd tough it out since it was supposed to be so great.
Within two days, my skin was not only drier, but red and blotchy. I do not even have "sensitive skin."
That was a few years ago. Recently, I received a sample of it again, and figured I'd see if it had been reformulated. It's popular, so I thought perhaps it had been. Nope. If anything, the smell is more repulsive. This time I washed it off as soon as I could. No one should put anything that smells so toxic on their skin!
I have never given anything such a bad review!
Smells like bug spray! December 10, 2009 Mrs Mad Maddy (Midwest) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Yucko Bucko! Maybe they named this Hope because when you put it on you hope the smell goes away. I noticed no benefits. I used it because I paid so much for it. I did not like it and it stunk. I am not a fan.
