1 out of 5 stars This stuff smells horrid   February 6, 2010
Reader of a lot of books (Boston, MA)
I don't like this product at all. It is greasy and smells. There is no hope, but talk in a jar.

4 out of 5 stars Truly Different Product and Really Good Moisturizer   December 13, 2009

I've never tried anything like this. And I've tried quite a few quality moisturizers. "Hope in a jar" really is good stuff. It soaks in quickly, is non-greasy yet very moisturizing, and leaves your skin feeling (and looking) good for an entire day. It is cost-efficient, too, because it lasts so long--you don't have to use much for full coverage.

Like some other reviews have stated, it really does have an unpleasant smell...and, unfortunately, the smell lingers throughout the day. (Some of my make-up brushes smell like it now.) If you can tolerate that (or maybe just get used to it), it's fantastic stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Can't get past awful smell   December 7, 2009

I love Philosophy product, the facial cleanser especially, and was excited to try this product but the medicinal smell is so strong and awful I can't give it a fair chance to see what the results would be. Maybe ok if no one else has to smell it at night, otherwise it sat on a shelf until I threw it away. Seems they could fix this . . . . .

5 out of 5 stars A new favorite   October 3, 2009

My review is based on my own skin type.

I do not have dry skin. I have dehydrated/thirsty OILY skin. I'm EXTREMELY acne prone due to high sebum production. Because of that, it is very very difficult for me to find a moisturizer. The only one other than hope in a jar that I've enjoyed (which I still do, VERY MUCH) is Clinique Moisture Surge - Unfortunately it's a bit too pricy for me.

With that said, what I first noticed about the product:

The odor: It has true lavender oil in it, and you can tell. It's not strong, and though some people find it unpleasant, I certainly do not.

The consistency: I was hoping for a gel type but it's not. It's more of a cream. However, it's very very light.

Application: A little goes a long way. Though it's a cream, it spread on very smoothly.

The first impression: "Oh great, another cream that's going to just turn me into an oil slick within 15 minutes."

The final impression: "WOW!!"

So it took about 5-10 minutes for it to fully soak in, but it actually did (which is a surprise). My skin did not suck it up as quickly as the moisture surge, but unlike the Clinique Moisture Surge, it seems to be just the right combination of moisture addition, and moisture retention (something I feel the Moisture Surge Lacks).

After the product was fully absorbed, my skin looked fresh and dewy (no, it's not a miracle cream, it just gave my skin the non-dehydrated look).

Hours later, no oil slick... in fact I do believe that rather than increasing sebum it actually decreased it (probably due to the actual hydration it recieved).

Days later, my skin actually looks like it's improving.

I will definitely be purchasing this product again, and again. Which is honestly the first time, after years of searching, that I have been able to say this for any moisturizer other than Clinique Moisture Surge.

This is a great product. I think the smell is great. Makes my skin feel soft. Will continue to keep buying!
